Redwood National Park to close two trailhead roads

Longer Walk to Some Redwood Park Trails - Carrie Peyton-Dahlberg/The Journal

Redwood National Park is closing two unpaved roads, starting on Monday, June 3, saying it doesn't have the money to maintain them properly.

Hikers and cyclists will still be able to use the roads to reach their favorite trails, but driving to those trailheads is out.

The road closure means access to the Tall Trees Grove will require a 16-mile round trip from the Redwood Creek Trailhead off Bald Hills Road north of Orick.

One option is to obtain a backcountry camping permit at the Kuchel Visitor Center and camp on the gravel bars along Redwood Creek and turn it into a two-day trip. This could end up being great, with likely nobody around in the Tall Trees Grove.

Access to many other trails, of course, remain open, as usual.

All national parks are absorbing a 5 percent cut in the remaining months of the federal fiscal year, which ends September 30, 2013. For Redwood National Park, this amounts to a $441,216 reduction from a budget of $8,824,318.
